Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan Resigns
Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan has resigned from the post of Chief Minister following the alleged scam with relation to the flat allotments in Adarsh Housing Cooperative Society in Mumbai. The scam has come as a shock to everyone in the state. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had readily demanded a resignation from the Chief Minister with regards to the scam. BJP said that they felt the incident was really shocking and the premises which were meant for the war widows had been exploited in a large extent. According to the BJP, the act was shameful and hence the Chief Minister should take up his moral responsibility and resign from his post. Thus after a series of discussions and meetings with the Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan handed over his resignation today.
Adarsh Society Scam
The Adarsh Co-operative Housing Society is located in a prime area of Colaba in Mumbai. The premises were meant for the war widows. However it came to light that many flats in this prime area where let out to several politicians and bureaucrats at prices comparatively lesser than the actual quote. The prime plot measures around 6490 sq. mt. Three out of the other apartments were allotted to Maharashtra Chief Minister's relatives including his mother-in-law, his sister in law and brother in law. These irregularities were revealed yesterday night and have brought the Maharashtra CM into trouble.
The Chef Minister has however put a strong defense against the issue and has welcomed any CBI investigations pertaining to this issue. He has strongly held that the land on which Adarsh Apartment stands belongs to the State Government and that he was not the sole member to take the decision regarding the allotments of the flats. However the Chief Minister's Political Fate as of now hangs in balance as he has readily accepted that his relatives were provided the flats in rates much lesser than the actual market price.
