Retailers of Mulund Municipal Market Go on an Indefinite Hunger Strike
The retailers of Sant Jalaram Bappa Municipal Market in Mulund have gone on an indefinite hunger strike from 1st November. This strike was called as no other option was left for these retailers to get attention and justice from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
Cause of Strike
Sant Jalaram Bappa Municipal Market is a small and old retail market in Mulund comprising of around 151 shop galas. It is one of the oldest markets in Mulund and is famous for discount shopping. Being an old market, it is included in the list of Structure Redevelopment meant for Dilapidated Buildings by BMC. However the retailers complain that BMC had failed to stick to their promise and have not followed the norms before going for a redevelopment.
BMC directly went on with appointing a developer, without following the tendering process. Additionally BMC didn't make any agreement with the retailers before going on with the redevelopment. The structure was demolished by BMC directly after evicting the retailers from their shops. Thus for meeting their demands and asking an explanation for this unjust activity on part of BMC, around 11 retailers have gone on an indefinite Hunger Strike from 1st November. Its been two days and they are yet to hear anything from the BMC Officials.
